Before the Dock homepage, a used-boat listing review platform with bold white typography, marine imagery, and a buyer intake call to action

A captain-owned used-boat listing review platform with buyer intake, private reports, an operator review desk, and marine specialist referrals.

The Problem

A used boat can look great in a Marketplace listing while leaving the expensive questions unanswered. Engine history, missing maintenance records, electrical issues, ownership paperwork, and discontinued parts can all change the purchase decision.

Buyers need a practical first step before committing money or arranging a full marine survey. As the owner/operator of DirtyBoat Charters at Robbie’s Marina in Islamorada, I built Before the Dock around that gap.

The Build

The site takes a buyer from a boat listing to a structured review request. Buyers share the listing and available details, then receive a private link to their review. An operator desk supports reviewing submissions, preparing reports, and publishing seller questions and recommended next steps.

The marine specialist section connects buyers with relevant expertise, including outboard mechanics and diesel specialists. Mechanics and certified marine surveyors can contact me to request a listing. Physical inspections and surveys are scoped separately; a listing review cannot establish a boat’s condition or seaworthiness.

The visual design pairs dark backgrounds, bold type, and marine imagery with a direct call to action: send the listing before you buy. Public pages are prerendered for search engines, while private reports stay out of search indexing. The build includes structured data, a sitemap, a social sharing image, and GA4 measurement.

Behind the interface, an Express API and managed Postgres database preserve requests across deployments. The workflow includes private access tokens, authenticated operator sessions, transactional report updates, and a durable email queue. GitHub pushes deploy the frontend and API through Netlify.

The Result

A live platform at beforethedock.com, with a complete buyer intake and review workflow. It brings my charter experience and software work together in a service for people considering a used boat.

The initial launch is a concierge pilot. Its business test is whether buyers will pay for a focused review before investing in an inspection or purchase; conversion and revenue results are still to be established.
