The Challenge

Hogfish Bar & Grill has been on the water at Safe Harbor Marina on Stock Island since 2002. Locals know it, Google Maps knows it, and the old Wix site was holding about 18,000 Google clicks over the previous ten months. It was also carrying a lot of junk. The only H1 on the homepage said “KEY LIME PIE.” Stock Wix demo photos of tofu skewers and schnitzel were still on the page. The hero video was a 22 MB file. And Google was still sending clicks to menu URLs from the WordPress site before Wix, which nobody had redirected.

Then the owners told us the part that actually hurt: “Hogfish doesn’t come up when I ask Siri or Google.” We traced part of it to an OpenStreetMap entry that pointed the restaurant at a food blog instead of its own site, plus a couple of directory listings with the wrong hours.

The Build

We rebuilt the site in Astro from the crawled Wix pages, kept the look the regulars know, and fixed what was underneath. The hero video went from 22 MB to 2.3 MB at 720p. It’s muted, hidden from screen readers, and has a pause button. Every page carries Restaurant structured data with the real Stock Island address, coordinates and hours. The menu page has Menu markup, the media page has VideoObject, and there’s an llms.txt file for AI assistants. A new “What is hogfish?” page and a visible FAQ answer the questions people ask a phone: hours, reservations, whether you can come by boat.

Reviews pull straight from Google at build time and get baked into the page, so there’s no slow widget. Netlify redirects cover the old WordPress menu URLs that were still getting clicks, the retired Wix pages, and 121 stale Wix event URLs.

Off the site, we corrected the OpenStreetMap entry so it points at hogfishbar.com and worked through the voice-search listings one by one. The DNS cutover had its own problems with leftover zones and conflicting records, and the runbook covers every step.

The Result

The new site went live September 8 with zero automated accessibility violations and every legacy URL redirected. The OpenStreetMap entry now links to hogfishbar.com, and Siri returned the correct address in a check on September 26. In a 30-question sample of AI engines, 18 answers named Hogfish and 16 cited its domain. That’s the baseline for the three-month SEO and AI search program we’re running now for Hogfish and its sister restaurant, Roostica.
